78FATS TheArts Collaborative, a theatre collaborative, is striving to tell the story of Reyhaneh Jabbari, through a play devised by Founder Faezeh Jalali, titled 07/07/07. On the inauspicious day of July 7, 2007, 19-year-old Reyhaneh Jabbari was put in jail after defending herself against a man who tried to rape her. Reyhaneh's self- defense resulted in her attacker's death and she was convicted for premeditated murder. She faced a seven-year trial, which she spent in prison. She faced ruthless torture during these years and her family faced cruelly harassed. Finally, she was hung last year, despite over-arching international uproar condemning the sentence. The letters she wrote of some brutal experiences during her last year in prison is what Jalali has based 07/07/07 on.
The dramatization of Reyhaneh's story saw a total collection of over 3.5 lakh, and helped in allowing this ambitious theatre troupe to perform in various locations in the country, including NCPA in Mumbai and Jagriti Theatre in Bangalore. The objective of this campaign was so that 07/07/07 could come to life and Reyhaneh’s story could be heard, and this objective has been met!
Such stories of gender-based violence and injustice, are not as rare as we would like. Although this is the story of one woman, it resonates with a thousand others, especially those living in patriarchal societies and lower socio-economic situations. Reyhaneh's is an important story to tell! We at Ketto believe that the arts, such as theatre, are important components of driving social change and eradicating ignorance and are happy we could help in allowing Reyhaneh's story to be voiced.
