32Spandana is a home for street children, orphans and any youth in need of critical care, guidance and love in Hyderabad, India. The home was founded in 1999 by Uttam Kumar and Shobha Rani, an inspiring social activist couple who made it their life's work to care for abandoned children. According to Shobha, the word spandana means reaching out spontaneously and immediately, and echoed the reason behind this home, to reach out to those kids who need love and guidance the most.
Spandana managed to raise over 4.5 lakh for meal plans for their children. 61 children have been provided for in total, and the money provides meals to these kids for 6 months. Caring for the nutritional requirements for so many children is not only difficult to oversee, but also very expensive. What's more, many of the children in the home have various nutritional deficiencies and conditions such as anemia. Each meal plan, costing a little less than INR 4000 for three months per child, not only took care of their food, but also their vitamin and mineral supplements for optimal health.
The donors not only stemmed from India, but many contributed from the UK, USA and Hong Kong. A meal plan for a child for three months amounts to about USD 61, and donors understood the difference that they could make to a child’s life simply through contributing this amount of money. Spandana’s efforts on Ketto saw support from 35 backers. Currently, Spandana has raised enough to provide meals and supplements for 61 kids for six months!
