About the Fundraiser

I am Riya Sen, an Indian actor and model. In collaboration with Child Rights and You, East, I am helping the organization in raising funds for the under-privileged children.Since the last 41 years, CRY has been working relentlessly to bring about a happy, healthy and creative childhood for every child. And I truly believe in what its late founder Rippan Kapur strongly had a conviction in that each of us can, in our own small way, be the agents of change, and when enough of us become one, the impact is a lasting change for the better. A rights-based approach that CRY believes in is essential to ensure that entitlements are available to all children without any discrimination.

I hail from a family of actors, my grandmother, the iconic Suchitra Sen, mother Moon Moon Sen and sister Raima Sen. My father, Bharat Dev Varma belongs to a royal lineage from Tripura. I began my career in 1991 as a child actress in Vishkanya and have since then appeared in numerous films (Style, Jhankar Beats, Kolkata Calling, Apna Sapna Money Money, Pati Patni Aur Woh to name a few) , donned magazine covers (of Elle, Cosmopolitan, India Today to name a few), television, advertisement and print commercials (for Lakme, Reliance, Limca campaign, Colgate to name a few), fashion shows for Manish Malhotra, JJ Vallaya, Wendell Rodricks, and music videos for Lata Mangeshkar, Jagjit Singh, Sonu Nigam and Falguni Pathak). In 2012, I won the Star Guide Award for the best actress for my role in the film "Noukadubi," directed by the late Rituparno Ghosh.

CRY has always ensured that children in its projects have access to free and quality education, primary health care and are safe from violence, abuse and exploitation. The pandemic will leave a trail of destruction for India's under-privileged children in its wake and the crisis is far from being over. To ensure that this doesn't become a child rights crisis in the long term, CRY has created a resilience and recovery plan for under-privileged children that focuses on their health, nutrition, education and safety.

The closure of government mechanisms like primary healthcare centres and the school midday meal scheme has severely affected children’s health. They’re unable to get proper nutrition, timely immunization or proper healthcare. CRY shall focus on ensuring regular vaccinations, providing timely care to pregnant and lactating mothers, addressing the issue of malnutrition. Children are also experiencing an unexpected gap in their schooling that has thrown their academic year out of focus. They will struggle with a massive learning deficit. CRY shall make certain that children do not drop out and get stuck in the cycle of poverty and address the significant psychological distress they may be dealing with.During any disaster, children’s vulnerability to abuse and exploitation increases and it’s important to ensure their safety. CRY will be focusing on rehabilitating vulnerable children and addressing their needs and strengthening child protection mechanisms.

Each cause that I have rooted for during these years, have been very special and close to me. I have worked as an activist and have appeared in an AIDS awareness music video to help dispel popular myths about the disease. And when it comes to CRY, I have always been motivated for the cause that it works for, feel and advocate very strongly about it.

I urge people to support and donate to CRY because they need YOUR help to put their plans into action. Your kind donation and generous support will make a huge difference and bring happier childhoods in the lives of these children! Let’s come together to fight against the lasting impact of the catastrophic outbreak on India's underprivileged children and help contribute to the larger solution that could give them a brighter future

Counting on each one of you! And as Rippan Kapur puts it, "What I can do, I must do."

Donate now!

With faith and hope,

Riya Sen.
