Project Information - Apnalaya Community Learning Centres

The slums in the M East Ward - Padma Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Rafi Nagar, bordering the Deonar Dumping ground (the largest dumping ground in Mumbai), are some of the poorest and most marginalised slums in Mumbai. About 7-8 family members stay in matchbox-like shanties of 10X15 feet, surrounded by 9.2 million tonnes of garbage dunes. Almost every public utility service is denied – Housing, Rations, and Water – to name a few. Not only is a quality life denied, but consequently, life itself is denied-the average age of death is 39 years. One of the reliable tickets out of poverty is education but the obstacles are large-illiterate parents and their apathy, low levels of quality of education in the local schools, no competent assistance to help children do well in school, lack of exposure to the outside world and the sheer lack of space needed to allow children to be curious, creative, intelligent and therefore successful. The Community Learning Centres are innovative hubs of educational services, located within the slums, as a single-window solution, providing a learning environment, educational resources, libraries (350 books in 3 languages), study classes, quiet spaces, exposure visits, counselling services and avenues for tapping creative talents, to the underprivileged children.
